We're Seeking New Board Members!

The American Association of University Women (AAUW) NYC branch seeking new members to join our Board of Directors. These are pro bono leadership roles offering the opportunity to shape the direction of the branch, contribute to meaningful work advancing gender equity, and build experience in strategy, operations, fundraising, communications, and policy.


AAUW has been advancing equity for women and girls since 1881. Today, the organization continues this work through research, advocacy, and community initiatives focused on economic security, education, and leadership. At the NYC Metro level, our board focuses on building a strong, engaged community while delivering high-impact programming.


If you’re interested in contributing your skills, building leadership experience, and being part of a thoughtful, action-oriented group, we’d love to hear from you.


Board Roles:

President (must have been a branch member for at least one year)

The President provides overall leadership and direction for the branch. Responsibilities include:

  • Setting strategic priorities and supporting the board’s work

  • Leading monthly board meetings and the Annual Meeting

  • Serving as the primary representative of AAUW NYC Metro 

  • Ensuring alignment with AAUW national priorities and branch bylaws

  • Supporting board members in their roles and fostering a strong, collaborative culture


Treasurer (must have been a branch member for at least one year)

The Treasurer oversees the financial health and accountability of the branch. Responsibilities include:

  • Managing the branch budget and financial records

  • Tracking income and expenses

  • Preparing and presenting financial reports

  • Supporting fundraising planning and financial decision-making

  • Ensuring compliance with AAUW and nonprofit financial practices


Vice President, Communications

The VP Communications leads how AAUW NYC Metro presents itself publicly. Responsibilities include:

  • Managing email newsletters and member communications

  • Overseeing social media and website updates

  • Promoting events and initiatives

  • Ensuring clear, consistent, and engaging messaging

  • Supporting visibility and growth of the branch


Vice President, Development

The VP Development focuses on fundraising and partnerships. Responsibilities include:

  • Leading fundraising efforts (events, campaigns, sponsorships)

  • Identifying and cultivating donor and partner relationships

  • Supporting grant applications and funding strategy

  • Working with the Treasurer and President on financial sustainability

  • Helping expand the branch’s reach and resources


Vice President, Policy

The VP Policy advances the branch’s advocacy work. Responsibilities include:

  • Monitoring and researching policy issues affecting women and girls in NYC

  • Engaging with policymakers, coalitions, and advocacy networks

  • Recommending priorities aligned with AAUW national policy goals

  • Communicating policy issues clearly to members and the public

  • Supporting events or initiatives related to civic engagement and advocacy


Board Member (General / At-Large)

Board Members contribute to the overall work of the branch and support priority initiatives. Responsibilities include:

  • Participating in strategic discussions and decision-making

  • Supporting events, partnerships, and programs

  • Taking on specific projects based on interest and skills

  • Contributing to a collaborative and engaged board culture


Expectations for All Board Members

All Directors are expected to:

  • Attend monthly board meetings (No Director shall miss more than two meetings per year)

  • Stay informed by reviewing board communications and documents

  • Prepare for meetings by reviewing agendas in advance

  • Respond to board communications within 48 hours (or two business days)

  • Submit reports as required


Time commitment: approximately 4–8 hours per month, including a monthly Zoom meeting (first Tuesday at 7pm).

Applicants must be based in NYC. Elections will take place at the Annual Meeting on June 16, 2026. Please register to attend.
